Micah Challenge is a global campaign to mobilize Christians against poverty.
The Micah Challenge has two aims:
· Looking inward on the Christian community in order to deepen Christian engagement with impoverished and marginalized communities.
· Looking outward and calling on leaders of the world to fulfill their promise to reduce poverty by half between now and 2015 (i.e. achieving the Millennium Development Goals).
In the year 2000, more than 190 leaders of states and governments came together under the auspices of the United Nations (UN). For the first time in human history they adopted a resolution to join forces and fight to reduce by half absolute poverty in the world between now and 2015. The emphasis of their resolution is on what has been called the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
This being in perfect harmony with the Word of God, two Christian organizations (World Evangelical Alliance and Micah Network) wanted to benefit from this historical event to launch the Micah Challenge (2004), which is a campaign aiming to raise the awareness of Christians to tragedy of global poverty and to deepen their commitment with the poor, following the example of Jesus. At this moment, 40 countries have launched a national campaign.
